A Guide to Leadership

There are different concepts about management and leadership and the function that it has on a business. It is essential for me to be able to understand the main principles of leadership and management in the market and how they can help the company to make the business goals. One of the first things that I need to see is the goals and vision and why it is vital for managers to understand leadership functions too and at the success, this has on a company. At any organisation is about inspiring and leading others to the victory of the business. Leadership is about developing a healthy culture which will help the business to grow.

It is essential for a leader to understand that the culture of the company is significant. I have recently spent some time looking at the work of Charles Handy and the Cultural Web which has allowed me to view the impacts this has had on Notting Hill Housing Association. Management can come from many different theories; some believe that more of a behavioural approach could apply whereas other authors such as Taylor understand that it is more management orientated and therefore a scientific process which the business needs to follow. Taylor’s style of management looks more at measurements of leadership with control and look at ways of improving people to improve the overall organisation then.

The theories of Taylor are more key performance indicator styles and rather than looking at behaviours, they look at management processes and how to increase the performance, this is an excellent skill to have as this demonstrates how a business can track numbers and perform to ensure it is the best. I believe that a mixture of management and numbers and looking at behaviours is the best source for a manager to be able to bring in the best styles of management.

There are different definitions of leadership in any business; this can include parts such as Transactional Leadership is an approach like Taylor and also others such a Transcultural Leadership and Transformational Leadership.

The concept of transcultural leadership is more about developing a person through learning and on the job training which is good and something which we use in different construction sites to help people learn new skills when they are working on jobs. I would use this approach a lot more, but sometimes you do need to have other different styles such as transactional and that approach which was delivered by Taylor. This is a management concept which is good to use in different situations when the manager needs to be more performance and action based instead of the coach style approach. The other idea of leadership which can be used includes the use of getting ideas from cultures to help managers bring a different style to the operation and to improve the various cultures make the business more successful.

Effective and Ineffective Leadership

Ineffective leadership leaves lousy communication in any business, we have a close team with a strong connection, however, if it wasn’t like this. It would stop teams from working together while effective communication in leadership can help a company to build more trust and grow the business more. The main issue which a company will find when the management are being ineffective is that they will start to create bad service and products which will then impact the company and the brand. This is a different situation when the business is looking at the practical communication as this will come from planned work which will then make the business come across in a positive way.

Effective communication is essential to help the business become more successful which is why companies need to pay more attention to this and to understand how they communicate and what could be changed. I think that positive communication would come from one to one chats and team development which would stop companies from performing in bad ways and this style would also stop a miscommunication happening which is a number one sources of

Different leadership styles can come in many different formats which is why managers need to pay attention to how this will help the company. The various theories being developed more over greater periods of time. Some leaders follow the grid of Maslow and his hierarchy of needs which shows how a leader needs to look at the different styles of the emotions of the individual and how they develop before they reach the next level within the pyramid; this starts off with the lowest level being safely and basic human needs and then leads into friends and self-development to success. I think the leadership is essential to the culture; we currently have a cultural and structural change here at Notting Hill which has allowed good leadership styles to now flow.

Other leadership styles include the Goleman approach which adopted six leadership styles which every leader or manager should follow. These are two very different styles which focus on different areas. This approach is more of a set of instructions whereas the approach by Maslow allows the manager to look at and analyse how a team member may develop over time within the company. Both of these leadership styles help to bring in more autocratic styles of leadership compared to dictatorship. I feel that autocratic is a way where a leader and build and develop more trust in the company and this is a preferred option to go for most the businesses and organisations within a modern working environment.

 

Different Leadership Types and Suitability

I do believe that it is always important to understand that different leadership and management styles will suit different situations. If you are creating a more open office with high trust and a community like a feel, you would want to demonstrate a more autocratic style of leadership, however, at many different times within a manager life, they would need to adopt dictatorship styles.

The events where this style of leadership can come from including the investigation and disciplinary hearing process, this is where more command is needed and in other situations where sales performance may not be great, and the business needs to be able to show that they can take more ownership through the management style. I believe that every manager should have the skills to switch between autocratic and dictator style at any period of their time as the situations which I have mentioned above would form at some point. A manager needs to be able to react and to help prevent the thing from happening which is why they need to build trust, but they also form a line when elements of progress are not working.

Suitability of Leadership Styles 

I believe that the factor that makes a manager in a company choose a particular style can have an impact on how it is used, the event happens to why a leader or a manager move their method can have a big impact. The autocratic style and understanding of culture is something of a factor that would happen in more daily life as the leader build up trust through work activities such as empowering the individual and developing the projects which they are working on.

The factors which could change this style of leadership from happening could be the team not bonding; this could have developed from misunderstanding or conflict through disliking people in the group. Another critical factor which can see the business and the management altering the style could be generated from the poor performance in the organisation. I feel that both of these situations cause for a reason to why a manager would switch to that transactional and dictatorship style of working and it is essential to implement the switch as the manager needs to show the team that they are in control of the situation and they have developed the culture well which explains this. From looking at how this impacts management styles, I feel that the manager needs to research the situation first and look at evidence from different sources to help them succeed more.

Ethical Dimensions of Leadership

Having the leadership styles and understanding when to use them is an important thing but a manager, we have strong ethical considerations here as we are working with the local communities as a housing association. Managers need to be aware of other parts of the process which can also include the ethical dimensions of leadership styles. These include the responsibilities the business has when they are looking at developing the team and understanding the policies and procedures such as Equality and Diversity act. This impacts the leadership style in a right way as the leader needs to be creating that area of trust and development which happens when you treat people equally, however, this can sometimes create positive discrimination which impact that business more when they are seen to be treating minorities too much and neglecting skills and talent. This is an exciting part of equality to consider, especially when you are looking at how a leader needs to develop and embed ethical styles. A manager should always complete a full review of the process to understand what is happening and what ethical parts they need to bring into the work to help this happen.

I think that it does need to be taken seriously and developed in a fair way. Other ethical dimensions which need to be considered are the mission and the core values of the organisation, these are good factors as they help to embed the overall culture within the organisation, however, they need to be showing and understand more about what the project and the team is about rather than just being embedded into the programme for the sake of it.

Job Satisfaction, Motivation and Leadership

Job satisfaction from an employee is something that all managers are aiming to achieve. It is always important to look at different views and what makes people work and how they can improve what they have. It is interesting to see the links between job satisfaction and motivation are clear, when motivation is high, the business performs well as job satisfaction is high.

To get high motivation in the first place, the business would need to have a leader who creates innovation, and this happens through empowerment within a company. Team members do not want to be micromanaged which is why the leader needs to embrace empowerment as a force which will increase the motivation within the whole company. Empowerment is linked to many different ways to drive business performance, it is linked to innovation which is when staff start to develop more entrepreneurial motivates and then increase the business performance because they are working on ideas, people create new ideas when they become motivated which helps when you are looking at the links between these areas to create a high-performance company.
